Welcome to Odense
Odense is situated on the island of Funen, right in the heart of Denmark and is the country’s third largest city with 200,000 inhabitants. Odense is one of Denmark’s oldest cities, and was originally named Odins Vé, as a place of worship for the Nordic god Odin. Due to this rich history, Odense has for centuries been a favorite destination for visitors. Today, it is first and foremost known as the hometown of the celebrated author Hans Christian Andersen. For more than a 100 years children of all ages around the world have enjoyed his fairytales like ”The Emperor’s New Clothes”, ”The Little Mermaid”, ”The Nightingale”, ”The Snow Queen”, ”The Ugly Duckling”, ”Thumbelina” and many more. His spirit lives on in Odense where fairytales come to life as you follow H.C. Andersen’s footsteps around the city.
In Odense everything is within comfortable walking distance and cycling distance, creating an intimate infrastructure and feel around your meetings. The city centre is easy to navigate on foot, whether you choose a quit stroll along the river or go explore its cozy cobblestone streets with shops and rows of cafés.
As the home of numerous students, Odense has a lively city centre with many bars and restaurants, and concerts, performances and events throughout the week. The city of Odense has a strong vision for its continuous growth and welfare, encouraging big dreams and challenging the norms, for example through festivals, congresses and other events of international scale.
An ambitious urban development plan is currently reshaping major parts of the city, which are being connected by an environment-friendly tramway. The project will be completed in 2021. This transformation will further consolidate Odense’s position as a centre of innovation, knowledge and education, where strong clusters in the fields of robotics, drones, health technology and IT are booming.
